Minutes of Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Women’s Club Meeting October 6, 2021

The meeting was called to order by president, Jennifer Tinkler followed with opening prayer by Linda McMichael and the reciting of the pledge of allegiance. Secretary’s report was presented by Laura Riley with no corrections. Tinkler reported in the treasurer’s absence a balance of $5,395.34. Tinkler asked that anyone who knows of someone needing a card, please pass their name(s) along to her so cards can be sent. This would include shut-ins, get well wishes and/or sympathy cards.

  • Book Club. The next meeting is October 27 at 6 PM. “He Leadeth Me” by Jesuit Father Walter J. Ciszek portrays his imprisonment in the Soviet Union. There will be no book club meetings in November and December due to the holidays.
  • Outreach Committee. Volunteers are needed to help fold boxes on Thursday evening at 6 PM. St. Mary’s school has requested 65 boxes and Lowell’s church has 23. The basilica is committed to filling 550 boxes.
  • Chicken dinner – November 7. After much discussion, the general consensus was to hold off until spring due to COVID. It was also suggested that we look at other options perhaps baked steak. Could work with the meat manager at Warren’s IGA for possible options. Tabled until early spring.
  • Social hour –was to begin in October. However, the group felt it was best to also postpone until spring due to COVID.
  • Funeral dinners. It has come to our attention that parishioners are being charged $300 for funeral dinners through the funeral homes. The dinners should be “free” and donations are welcome. Tinkler will speak with the funeral home directors regarding costs.
  • Christmas dinner. There is a conflict with the December 1 date due to a concert being performed at the basilica on that Wednesday. Tinkler will check availability with the rectory to reschedule the dinner. She will also check with the Knights of Columbus to see if they would be interested in preparing the meal and what the cost would be. Typically $10 per person.
Possible selections suggested were baked steak and/or baked chicken. Once details are finalized, a flier will be prepared and inserted into the church bulletin so ladies can sign up. This will be re-evaluated in November based on the status of COVID.
  • Adopt a Seminarian. CWC will adopt one, Joseph P. Hahn but we will send cards to all three including a gift for the Christmas holiday.
  • CWC will decorate the social hall for the holidays on Tuesday, November 30 at 6 PM. Pizza will be provided.

The meeting was adjourned with the next one scheduled for Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

Respectfully submitted,
