Minutes of Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption
Catholic Women in Action (CWC)
November 6, 2024

  • President Debbie Lazorik opened the meeting with the pledge of Allegiance and prayer.
  • Secretary’s report by Nancy Funk for October was approved
  • Treasurer’s report by Barb Ritchie was approved.
  • Debbie Murray and Cheryl Nau attended to talk about the Helping Hands Ministry, which delivers meals on a temporary basis for individuals and families with a particular need.  This ministry began 25 years ago in order to help women who are pregnant or have a new baby and also for those with a death or sickness in the family.  We call them to offer help and ask them about any allergies or food dislikes.  The ministry is requesting help with identifying people in need and also for volunteers to make meals.  Anyone wanting to help in some way can contact Debbie Murray at 740-516-9460 or Cheryl Nau at 740-516-1319.
  • Book club – There will be no meetings in November or December due to holiday schedules.   The January book will be the last three stories from “The Lineage of Grace”.
  • A Bible study on the book of Luke begins November 13 at 6:00.  It will be held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
  • Outreach committee
  • We collected 530 boxes for Box of Joy, 90 from the school
  • The Cookie Walk will be December 14 and 15.  This year we will host it after the 5:30 mass on Saturday, as well as after the 8, 10 and 12 masses.  We need a lot of cookies.  The money raised will go to the Daily Bread Kitchen.
  • Breakfast with Santa is scheduled for December 8.  Teresa asked if we would be interested in having a bake sale with it.  But we felt it would be too much with the Cookie Walk the following week.  It was noted that the Diocesan Youth Conference is on the same weekend.  They are looking for families to host college students for the weekend.
  • The Diocesan anniversary mass will be this Sunday, November 10 at 12:00.  We have been asked to hold a reception after the mass.  Anyone wanting to help can contact Debbie.  They are expecting 100 to 150.  This will be added to the calendar for future years.
  • We discussed having a Super Bowl meal fundraiser in February.  We would like to have subs again but the cost may be prohibitive.  Debbie will check with Subway to see if we could get a discount on rolls.
  • Update on the Oktoberfest.  The dinner netted $5000 for the school.  The beer garden was never intended to make money. Teresa will update us about the proceeds from the auction.  Nancy Matheny mentioned that the vendors were disappointed with the response to their booths.  It was also noted that there were no signs pointing to the vendor’s area.
  • Leslie Lapardus led a sourdough process workshop at the beginning and end of the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned. Next meeting will be the CWA Christmas mass and dinner on December 4. Sign-up lists will be at the doors to the church.  There will be no meeting in January since it would fall on Jan 1 and the bible study will be the following week.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Funk
