Minutes of Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Women’s Club Meeting January 19, 2022

  • The meeting was called to order by president, Jennifer Tinkler, followed with opening prayer by Cecilia Cottrill and the reciting of the pledge of allegiance.
  • Secretary’s report was presented by Jennifer with no corrections noted.
  • Treasurer, Melanie Fouss, reported a balance of $8,074.91 in the CWC account. January donations from the envelope collections are at $803 with a few weeks remaining in the month.
Last year’s donations totaled $900. It was noted that $2,420 of the reported balance is earmarked for the purchase of the water well (more info follows in the minutes).
  • Tinkler asked that requests for parishioners’ cards be forwarded to her or Carol Antill.
  • Next book club meeting is January 26, 2022, and the book for discussion is “Scarlet Thread”.
Nancy Ruff reported participation continues to be strong and the book club will be celebrating a one-year anniversary at January meeting with snacks and drinks.
  • Outreach Committee – Barb Ritchie. The ORC reported a successful cookie sale with $1,020 profit. An additional $1,400 was donated in honor of Barb’s retirement.
    • A quilt raffle is the next fundraiser to grow the balance to approximately $6,800 -$8,000. These funds will be utilized for the water well project in Uganda. The committee is in the process of determining which organization the money will be contributed to. Leaning towards Food 4 Poor which provides a water system for an entire community. A plaque would be made with the Basilica of St. Mary Assumption’s name listed as the donor. More info to follow in future meetings.
  • Sub Sale. The CWC had a successful sub sale for the Super Bowl in 2020. Do we want to do again for 2022? With the Super Bowl being so close, there would not be sufficient time to initiate. Could possibly do for March Madness or Fat Tuesday. Will continue discussion at February meeting.
    • Pricing and availability of product would be different this year.
    • Discussion whether a salad (chicken, egg, or ham) sale would be more profitable. Would definitely require more work on the CWC’s part than the sub sale. Fouss noted that in 2018 the club made $1,491 on the salad sale.
  • Cecilia Cottrill asked if the CWC would be willing to donate cookies for the school during Catholic Schools’ Week. Penny Rose made a motion to donate cookies and Nancy Funk seconded it.
Motion carried. Lawren Minnick volunteered to get the cookies.
    • Cottrill also asked if the club would provide pizza for first reconciliation on February 22 at 6 PM for 20 kids plus parents. The group agreed and we will also provide dessert.
  • Tinkler asked for volunteers to take over the “food portion” of the president’s responsibilities. This would include funeral dinners and parish food needs. Rose agreed to continue as chair for the funeral dinner committee. Tinkler will send out an email asking for additional help in this regard. If there are no volunteers, she may have no choice but to step down as president due to personal issues and commitments.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 2 at 6 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Penny Rose
