Minutes of Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption
Catholic Women in Action (CWC)
February 4, 2026

  • President, Debbie Lazorik, opened the meeting with the pledge of Allegiance. Nancy Matheny opened with prayer.
  • Secretary’s report by Nancy Funk for January was approved.
  • Treasurer’s report by Barb Ritchie for January was approved.
  • Sunshine report – Cards were sent to Father Mike and to the Foran family at the loss of their baby.
    • Barb passed around thank you cards from Father Emmanuel, Leanne Cooper and Sam Inkovich.
  • Book club – The meeting was cancelled due to the weather.  The book for January, “The Book Club for Troublesome Women” will be discussed at the February meeting.  The original book scheduled for February, “Night Road” will be discussed in March.
  • Outreach committee – We have collected about 40 rosaries for Cross Catholic.  This collection will go on until Summer.
    • Nancy Funk reminded everyone to sign up for the blood drive on March 12.   A flyer with the tear off notice will be in the bulletin on Sunday, February 8.
  • Volunteer opportunities
    • Subs for the super bowl will be passed out on February 8.  We need people to pass them out after each mass.
    • We have been asked to host the Women’s Day of Spirituality.  This will be held on March 21.  We will need people to set up.
    • The Chrism mass dinner will be held on Monday, March 30.  It will be catered but we will need people to set up and pour wine.
    • Debbie will write an article for the bulletin thanking people who donated to the Catholic Women’s Club.  Over $3000 was donated in January.
    • March 17 there will be a pilgrimage bus tour with lunch.
  • The seminarian Sam will hold a Lenten program on March 15 from 2-4:15. He and Father Edward discussed the program, “Habits of Holiness”.
  • The kitchen cabinets were cleaned by the Marietta Maids.  Members of our club rearranged the cabinets and closets and disposed of items we no longer use.  Some were donated to the St. Vincent de Paul association.
  • The library committee has met and is cleaning up some of the older books and rearranging those we are keeping.  It was suggested that we take books to the Bible Center as they have a program to send books out to places that can use them.  Father Edward is going to put in a bulletin announcement asking people to  not just drop off any book for the library.  They are recommending that we get a smaller table for the library as the one we have is too big for the room.  Sheila is going to see about getting one donated from the Board of Elections.  The committee also combined the check out sheets for both the library and the book club.  The books for book club were moved to a different bookshelf.  Carol Wharf suggested getting copies of the book on the mass for children for the pews.  Carol will check into costs.  It was also suggested we purchase some for the gift shop to sell.  Also we are going to look into getting copies of The Dynamic Catholic for parishioner to take home.
  • Teresa Domico is trying to start a youth group for children 4-7.  There will be a planning committee on February 12.  Everyone is invited to attend.
  • Crystal mentioned there is also a need for a social group for children 8-12.
  • The movie, The Passion, will be held on the Monday before Good Friday, March 30.
  • Linda McMichel talked about the Daily Bread Kitchen.  She will be stepping down as leader in June.  If no one steps up to take it over, it may have to fold.  It was suggested that she or a DBK worker give a 5-minute talk after the masses describing how it is run and ask for volunteers to take over leadership.  It was suggested that she go on Talk of the Town on WMOA to request help.

The meeting was adjourned.  The next meeting will be March 4.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Funk
