Minutes of August 4, 2021

Meeting was called to order by the president, Jennifer Tinkler, and Father Jeremiah gave the opening prayer. All members recited the pledge of allegiance. The secretary’s report was presented by Penny Rose with no corrections. It was noted the minutes will be posted to the church web site. The treasurer’s report was presented by Tinkler with a balance reported of $4,815.98. Expenses for July 7 – August 4 were $378.29. If members know of parishioners who need cards sent, please reach out to Tinkler and/or Carol Antill. A card was read from the Beardmore family thanking the women for the funeral dinner they prepared.

  • Book Club – Debbie Lazorik
    • “In Praise of the Bees” by Kristin Gleeson is the next book for discussion on August 25.
    • Continued support and attendance each month. Purpose to bring together attendees in our faith. Debbie received an email from an attendee expressing how much she enjoyed the book club. Please encourage others to attend and note that you do not have to read the book to participate.
  • Outreach Committee
    • Janet Steinel reported that 173 pairs of glasses were delivered to the Lions’ Club. They were very appreciative.
    • Soles 4 Souls going extremely well thus far. Received 92 pairs of shoes on the first weekend and the drive will continue throughout the month of August.
    • Box of Joy is the next project which starts in October. Last year the parish filled 440 boxes which was down due to COVID. Volunteers will be needed to put the boxes together in mid-September (committed to 550) and to assist in collecting boxes after each mass and shopping for box contents. Steinel will let us know at September meeting what is needed.
    • Jennifer Tinkler will add outreach efforts to the Facebook page. It was also suggested that this be sent to the Steubenville Register. Laura Riley will address.
  • Discipleship Quads – Father Jeremiah
    • Father outlined the program which was started by Franciscan University and the model continues to be successful after 30 years. Small groups of 4-5 make up a quad and they meet weekly for up to 1-1/2 hours. There are daily readings and it has a bible study component to the program. Quad members share their blessing and struggles and how they relate to the passages.
    • Start-up kit available on the web site and all materials are free.
    • Discussion began about how parishioners get involved and how to get the word out.
      • Suggestions included the social hour (coffee and donuts)
      • After the parish picnic
      • Separate info session scheduled during an evening to explain in greater detail
    • Feel free to share Father Jeremiah’s email with interested parties (jhahn@diosteub.org).
  • Social Hour
    • Will begin the third Sunday in September after all masses
    • Debbie Lazorik will write up an announcement for the bulletin and Jennifer will review
    • Cookies will be provided at the conclusion of the 5:30 and Noon mass, and donuts for the two morning masses
    • Donations will be welcomed to cover expenses
    • It was suggested that we get others involved to help serve, etc. Perhaps the Eucharistic ministers, etc.
    • The priests should remind parishioners prior to the end of the mass that the social hour follows the mass
    • We will host this for September and depending on participation, decide whether to proceed monthly
  • Fall Festival (October)
    • CWC received a letter from St. Mary’s school regarding possible participation in the “Taste of St. Mary” to be held on Friday evening. The school is hoping for approximately 15 different vendors and thought perhaps the CWC would like to be a vendor for our chicken dinner.
    • It was not clear if the school wanted the Sunday evening chicken dinner meal. If people attend on Friday, they may not come back Sunday evening.
    • It was suggested that perhaps the CWC do wings instead of chicken, or make a donation to the school.
    • Jennifer will get more information from Tammy Bradley and report at the September meeting.
  • Funeral Dinners
    • Catering options are limited due to lack of help with the catering groups.
    • Penny Rose reported that Giant Eagle and Qdoba were possible options.
    • Jennifer is waiting to hear back from Hensler’s Market as well as DaVinci’s.
    • If a family wants the standard CWC meal (ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, tossed salad and dessert), we will provide. If they want a different catered option, it will be their responsibility to call the caterer, order and pay for the food. It can be delivered to the social hall and the CWC will set things up, serve and clean up. CWC will provide dessert and drinks.
    • More information forthcoming.
  • Hot Dog Sauce for School Bingo
    • Penny Rose reported that the school will provide Giant Eagle gift cards to purchase supplies for the sauce. If you are interested in helping make the sauce, please let Penny know.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at 6 PM in the social hall. No mass.

Respectfully submitted,
Penny Rose
