Minutes of Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption
Catholic Women in Action (CWC)
January 7, 2026

  • President, Debbie Lazorik, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Cheryl Nau opened with prayer.
  • Secretary’s report by Nancy Funk for November was approved.
  • Treasurer’s report by Barb Ritchie for November was approved.
  • Sunshine report – Debbie talked to Carol Antill about transitioning to a sunshine program.  Carol will still coordinate it, but there will be 3 or 4 more who will help with sending cards.  Nancy Matheny would like to help and will contact Carol about it.  Current recipients include:  Tiffany Craven, at the death of her father; Irene Cain at the death of her son; Mary Beth Browne’s family; and Christine Cook, at the death of her daughter.
  • Book club –  The January book is “The Book Club for Troublesome Women”.  The next book club meeting is January 28.  This begins the 4th year for the book club. $500 for the purchase of books was approved.
  • Outreach committee
    • Cross Catholic has requested that we collect rosaries.  They include rosaries in all of the boxes of joy that they send out.  This will need to be approved by Father Edward.
    • Nancy Funk announced the blood drive will be held on March 12 in the social hall.  A notice is in the bulletin asking for volunteers to give blood.  Later, there will be a flyer with sign-up opportunity that can be put in the offering basket.
  • Volunteer opportunities
    • Dinner for the children before their first reconciliation.  There will be pizza and cupcakes.  Need 3 to help.  Reconciliation is January 16.
    • Funeral dinner for Tiffany Craven’s family after her father’s funeral.  This will be Monday, January 12.  Food will be catered.  5 or 6 needed to help.
  • The program, Listening to God and Each Other, by Sam the Seminarian, was well attended.  The feedback was very positive.  The question is whether we want to have Sam another time and how often.  He indicated that he has other programs that he can share with us.  The consensus was that it would be a good program for Lent.  Deb Coty will contact him about possible dates.  It was suggested that we videotape the talks and put them on the website for those who cannot attend.
  • We went over the calendar for 2026.  Janet Schilling is responsible for keeping it up to date.
    • Nancy Matheny volunteered to bring a Longaberger basket to raffle at the May Crowning.
    • Debbie will contact the fairgrounds about scheduling our picnic there on September 27.
    • There was a question about whether there will be a Vacation Bible School this summer.  Crystal will check with Elizabeth Tokodi, who is in charge of religious education.
  • We will offer superbowl subs again this year on February 8.  Hucks has agreed to supply them.  We will again offer Italian and Turkey subs.  Janet Steinel will create a flyer to put in the bulletin.  It will include a request to identify the mass people will attend to pick up the subs.
  • The movie, The Passion, will be shown by the OCIA the Monday before Easter.  All of the church is invited to attend.  Question whether we wish to have a movie night again in the spring.
  • Flyers for donations to the CWA will be in the bulletin on January 10 and 11.  Envelopes were stapled to the back of the flyer.

The meeting was adjourned.  The next meeting will be February 4.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Funk
