Itinerary for the Pilgrimage

Day 1: Monday Jan 2 - Depart U.S. from Columbus for overnight flight to Rome with a transfer in Atlanta.

 

Day 2: Tuesday Jan 3 - Rome/Assisi - Arrive Rome and transfer to our motor coach for our drive through the Umbria countryside  to Assisi. Mass at St. Mary of the Angels. Remainder of day is free to freshen up from our travels or venture out on your own. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. (D) 

 

Day 3: Wednesday Jan 4 - Assisi - This morning, after Mass, enjoy an orientation tour of Assisi, including the Basilica of  St. Francis and the Convent of St. Clare. Remainder of day is free to explore on your own. You may want to visit San Damiano  where St Francis heard the cross speak to him or San Rufino where St. Francis and St Clare were Baptized. Enjoy a gelato or do  some shopping. Dinner & overnight in Assisi. (B, D)

 

Day 4: Thursday Jan 5 - Assisi/Norcia/Assisi - After breakfast we make our way to Norcia, a beautiful Medieval village and the birthplace of St. Benedict and his twin sister St. Scholastic. We will participate in the beautiful Chanted Mass with the Monks of  Norcia. Enjoy a tour of the Basilica and crypt where St. Benedict and St. Scholastic were born. Enjoy the product of the Monks labor “Birra Nursia”.  Time for lunch and strolling the quaint streets of this walled town.  Return to Assisi for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

 

Day 5: Friday Jan 6 - Assisi/Siena/Florence - Today we depart Assisi and make our way to Florence via Siena, home of St. Catherine, Doctor of the Church. Siena, a beautiful medieval walled city, is in the heart of Tuscany. We will celebrate Mass in  the Basilica of San Dominica. Time permitting we will visit the Church of St Francis which houses the Eucharistic Miracle. (If on display).  223 consecrated hosts have remained intact for 276 years as a sign of the permanent reality of Christ in the Eucharistic  Sacrament.  Afterward, visit the Piazza del Campo, the Palazzo Pubblico, the Fonte Gaia and the Duomo with its black and white  façade and beautiful marble floor inlays. Enjoy some time for lunch and shopping before we continue our journey to Florence for  dinner and overnight. (B, D)

 

Day 6: Saturday Jan 7 - Florence - Toady we will take part in a guided tour of Florence to including the Academia to view  the famous “David”, the massive Duomo (Basilica) which dominates the skyline, the Baptistery with its famous bronze doors  (Gates of Paradise), Campanile di Giotto, and Santa Croce Church where Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci are buried.   Mass will be celebrated in a local church. Day 7: Sunday Jan 8 - Florence / Orvieto / Rome - After breakfast we make our way to Rome. On the way we will stop in Orvieto, the town that sits on a 1,000-foot high rock formation, poetically crowned by Italy’s most renowned Gothic cathedral. Because of its strategic location, Orvieto for centuries served as a refuge for the  popes in troubled times. We visit the famous Cathedral housing the corporale of the Miracle of the Eucharist in Bolsena. Continues on to Rome for dinner and  overnight. (B, D)  

 

Day 8: Monday Jan 9 - Rome -Today we will visit St. John Lateran where we will celebrate Mass. After our visit we will cross the street to visit Scala Sancta, the Holy stairs. We continue on to Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, which houses Relics of the Passion of our Lord, Santa Maria Maggiore and Saint Alphonsus di Liguouri Shrine, (housing the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help). Tonight we will enjoy a night tour of Rome. (B, D)

 

Day 9: Tuesday Jan 10 - Rome - This morning we head to the Vatican Museum where we will see the beautiful Sistine Chapel and St Peters Basilica. The afternoon we will visit one of the Catacombs along the Appian Way, as well as St. Paul Outside the Walls, built over the Saint's burial place. (B, D)

 

Day 10: Wednesday Jan 11 - Rome - Walk to St. Peter’s for the Papal audience,  (pending the Holy Father’s schedule). Afternoon tour of Ancient Rome to include  the colosseum, the Pantheon and St. Peter’s in Chains.  Mass time and location to  be determined. (B, D)  

 

Day 11: Thursday Jan 12 - Rome - This final full day we begin with Mass at St. Peter’s (pending confirmation).  Remainder of day is free to shop or explore  Rome on your own. (B, D)

 

Day 12: Friday Jan 13 - Rome / USA -This morning depart for the Rome airport  for our return flight home with connection in Atlanta. (B)
